Dystopia Boy The Unauthorized Files Trevor D Richardson Books
This novel immediately captured my interest as a must read because the theme updates many past speculative fiction books about where our government and society may be headed. The author incorporated complex and fascinating characters into a plot that raced through scenarios that many of us recognize as only marginally beyond what we experience or read about in the credible media. The tangled, but lucid web of intrigue between characters kept me off balance with a series of unpredictable revelations. It shined a light on some disturbing possibilities facing our world while keeping this reader satisfied throughout the book that the human spirit will endure as the future unfolds.Dystopia Boy: The Unauthorized FilesTags : Amazon.com: Dystopia Boy: The Unauthorized Files (9781940233062): Trevor D Richardson: Books,Trevor D Richardson,Dystopia Boy: The Unauthorized Files,Montag Press,1940233062,General,Fiction,Fiction General,Fiction Science Fiction Cyberpunk,Science Fiction - Cyberpunk,Science fiction
Dystopia Boy The Unauthorized Files Trevor D Richardson Books Reviews
Disclaimer I consider myself friends with the author, and I received a harcopy version of this novel through a book trade with him.
There's so much talent packed into this novel that I'm honestly not sure where to begin. It's a beast of a book that almost drags on too long, but at the end, you realize that it's all integral to the story. It also features a unique narration style that shouldn't really work, but drops the reader in seamlessly and never lets go.
This novel is the life story of a kid who grows as the United States is plunging further and further into religious and economic chaos. Though written in 2014, the only way it could be creepier to read now is if a genuine religious zealot had won the 2016 presidential election. Instead, in today's era of Trump, it's all too easy to see how progress could reverse course and our country could end up like Richardson's representation.
In the massive surveillance state that the country has become, the kid's story is not narrated by Joe himself, but by the Watcher assigned to research him. Instead, we see Joe's life through Anders' eyes and perspective. As the story progresses, these things become more and more entwined, until Anders is just as much a part of Joe's story and evolution.
The drug use started to feel a bit gratuitous, and I would have preferred that Joe stick with his original allies rather than them getting replaced so close to the end. The pop culture references should have felt overwhelming, but they always stayed just on the side of amusing rather than obnoxious.
Spoiler alert There's a giant "To Be Continued" at the end of the book, though what occurs in the text does work as a cohesive story. It is the history of Joe Vagrant up to the current time and how the country came to this way. Even thought it left me wanting more, as a reader, I'm content with the story I did get as a whole.
Dull, Boring and silly!
I expected an excellent read... I was Not disappointed! Wonderful from start to finish!!!
As a fan of the genre I ordered a copy the day it was released. I finished it within a week because I could not put it down. Seriously one of the coolest premises and fun books I've read in a while. Trevor gives the reader something to look forward to on each page. If you haven't read his stuff yet, you are doing yourself a disservice.
DYSTOPIA BOY thrusts the reader into a world that may have existed if George Orwell's 1984 had come true (some, like Snowden, say it's here now...). Trevor uses smart dialogue and implants a genius turn of phrase on just about every page. It is an entertaining read that also makes you think where our society could be headed if we let it continue to degrade.
Dystopia Boy is a mash up of punk rock anarchy, religious paranoia, and cyber war technology. Although set in a dystopian future, it is grounded in our own time with references to pop culture and 80s video games. You can see how the society that Joe Vagrant inhabits came to be from our own time line. Where Dystopia Boy really excels is the characters from Joe Vagrant and his crew of miscreants. The main antagonist, Anders, if you can call him, that is reasonable and portrayed as multi-layered, which makes the whole novel seem more believable. The novel is fresh and unique and blends cyber punk styles with a more literary sensibility. I highly recommend it.
Where do I start with Dystopia Boy? The title gives you the right impression on the journey this book will take you on. Set in the not so distant future, technology and religion are being used to monitor and control the masses. The story follows a dutiful agent of the Watchers as he tracks down a hacker criminal. The narrative jumps around in a unique style that redefines the omnipotent narrator. The journey is expansive part road trip, part conspiracy theory and peppered with a plethora of science fiction and pop culture references to provide some levity in the darker parts of the novel. The climax of the story will leaving you begging for the sequel. The author has a unique storytelling style all his own with strong influences from Phillip K. Dick, Chuck Palahniuk and Neil Gaiman. Definitely worth a read.
